While we are working towards creating Hub Helsinki with your help, it was a good moment to meet people from other Hubs (Henna and Johanna from Hub Jyväskylä were there too, which meant that we had a very strong Finnish representation!) and get properly connected with the Hub network.

This is a pic to inspire you. It’s from Hub Islington and although every Hub is different, it gives you an idea of the space and how it combines a feeling of a living room and professional environment. That’s our goal too…

Viime viikolla joimme kahvit työministeri Anni Sinnemäen ja erityisavustaja Tapio Laakson kanssa. World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 ideiontipäivän jäljiltä Hubin olivat vallanneet kaupunkilaisten tuhannet ideat suurten kylttien muodossa. Keskustelu ministerin kanssa polveilikin Ideointipäivästä Hub Helsingin syntyvaiheisiin ja tulevaisuuden suunnitelmiin. Puhuimme pitkään myös Hubin roolista yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden edistämisessä, ja ajatus järjestää aiheesta konferenssi ensi vuonna nostettiin myös esille valtiovallan edustajien kanssa.

Vierailu oli konkreettinen todiste siitä, että Hubin edustama toimintamalli on nyt nosteessa ja sille on selkeää tilausta. Mikä paremmin todentaisi “Hub – where unlikely allies meet” -lausahduksen kuin se, että eri ministeriöiden edustajat tekisivät Hubissa etäpäiviä jakaen työpöydän vaikkapa nukketeatterilaisen ja pienyrityksen työntekijän kanssa. Yhteiskunnan sosiaalinen punos vahvistuisi taatusti.

Samalla kun etsimme Hubille pysyviä toimitiloja, suunnittelemme Hubin kalenteria ensi syksyksi ja alkuvuodeksi.

Kalentereita on itse asiassa kolme: Hub Clinic (koulutustilaisuudet), Hub Society (yhteiskunnalliset aiheet) sekä Hub Culture (it is what it says on the tin…). Tähän kalenteriin voit vaikuttaa antamalla ehdotuksia tai järjestämällä oman tilaisuutesi tahi työpajasi Hubin tiloissa.

Mielenkiinnolla olemme seuranneet brittien uuden hallituksen suunnitelmia yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden nostamisesta yhdeksi hallitusohjelman tukipilariksi. Nyt kun kyseisen termin  on itse kuningatarkin ottanut sanastoonsa, niin portit Elysionin kentille ovat apposen auki.

Things are developing at the Hub as the summer is approaching. Word of mouth seems to work pretty efficiently which means that new individuals and organisations continue to find their way to the Hub. Hub Breakfast is next week (it is 10th June 9am-10am), and the following week will bring us the Hub Unsauna. You are naturally invited, it’ll be on the 17th of June from 6pm onwards at the legendary Harjutori Sauna in Kallio. We’ll enjoy the sauna, vihta and good company.

Last week we had coffee with Minister of Labour Anni Sinnemäki and her special assistant Tapio Laakso at the Hub. Thousands of ideas had been spread around the space following the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 Ideas Forum. We talked about the Ideas Forum, as well as how Hub Helsinki was born. While sketching our future plans to the Minister we highlighted an initiative to organise a conference on social entrepreneurship early next year.

The visit is excellent proof that the Hub model is in demand and there is clearly a gap in this type of market. Imagine this: representatives from the different Ministries working in the Hub by sharing a a desk with a NGO worker and a puppet theatre artist. “Hub – where unlikely allies meet” strapline would materialise. The social glue of society would definitely improve.

While we are looking for a permanent space, we are also planning the events calendar for the next autumn and next year. It’ll comprise Hub Clinic (training) Hub Society (environmental & societal issues) and Hub Culture (it is what it says on the tin…). You can have your say by giving us suggestions or organising your own event/workshop at the Hub.

It’s been interesting to follow how the new coalition government in England has established social entrepreneurship as one of the core issues in their programme. Now that the Queen herself has mentioned the term it looks like the gates to the Elysian Plains are wide open.

Cambridge 2008. John Elkington puhumassa kirjastaan: “The Power of Unreasonable People; How Social Entrepreneurs Create Markets That Change The World.” Se oli minulle käänteen tekevä hetki yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden suhteen. Oma taustani on yrityksen yhteiskuntavastuun edistämisessä ja tietty juuri sen takia koko käsite vaikutti äärimmäisen mielenkiintoiselta. Yhtiöiden yhteiskuntavastuuohjelmat perustuvat kolmikantakonseptiin eli ns. “Triple bottom line” lähestymistapaan: ympäristön suojeleminen, talouselämän edistäminen ja yhteiskunnallinen kehitys. Yhteiskunnallisessa yrittäjyydessä tämä kolmikantakonsepti on koko toiminnan perusta ja itsetarkoitus. Elkingtonin sanoin: yhteiskunnallisia yrittäjiä motivoi ennen kaikkea ideaalin, ei niinkään “dealin” saavuttaminen (“What motivates many of these people [social entrepreneurs] is not doing the ‘deal’ but achieving the ‘ideal’”).

Yhteiskunnallinen yrittäjyys tuntuu nyt olevan huimassa nosteessa Suomessa. Tällaisille bisneksille on siis selkeästi tilausta, ja hallitus lienee asiasta samaa mieltä.

Jonathon Porritt (yksi kestävän kehityksen suurista nimistä Englannissa) on todennut, että nykyinen kapitalismimalli on tullut tiensä päähän. Meidän tulee kollektiivisesti luoda toisenlainen tapa kehittää yhteiskuntaamme ja yhteiskunnallinen yrittäjyysmalli sopii tähän mainiosti; se on itse asiassa avainasemassa uudenlaista taloutta luodessa.

Minulle henkilökohtaisesti yhteiskunnallinen yrittäjyys edustaa ennen kaikkea innovaatiota, korkeaa elämisen laatua ja tuota yllämainittua kolmikanta-ajattelua. Se on kestävän kehityksen manifesti antaen meille mahdollisuuden uudelleen määritellä minkälaisia siteitä haluamme rakentaa toisten ihmisten ja ympäristön kanssa.

Tämän kaiken perusteella saattaa arvata, että kun näin Hub Helsingin etsivän toimitusjohtajaa, olin saman tien näpyttelemässä hakemusta. Olen äärimmäisen vaikuttunut Hub Helsinkiläisten jo tekemästä työstä ja tunnen olevani etuoikeutettu päästessäni osalliseksi tätä osaajien yhteisöä ja rakentamaan sen menestystarinaa.

Rantaudun Suomeen muutaman viikon sisällä ja toivon, että pääsen tutustumaan Hubilaisiin hetimiten. Tulevaisuus epäilemättä tuo tullessaan haasteita, mutta se tulee taatusti olemaan myös äärimmäisen mielenkiintoista ja palkitsevaa.

Hello Hub Helsinki Community,

It was John Elkington speaking on his latest book in Cambridge 2008. “The Power of Unreasonable People; How Social Entrepreneurs Create Markets That Change The World.” That was my defining moment with a social enterprise. Coming from a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) background I found the concept fascinating: the “triple bottom line” approach—social progress, environmental protection and economic development—which underpins various companies’ CSR programmes, was actually the very purpose of the social enterprise itself. As Elkington writes: “What motivates many of these people [social entrepreneurs] is not doing the ‘deal’ but achieving the ‘ideal’.”
Indeed.

Social enterprise seems to be a real buzz word now in Finland. Rapid growth in the field shows that there is a great need for these kinds of businesses and this view is shared by the Finnish government. As Jonathon Porritt (a big wig in the field of Sustainable Development in the UK) states, capitalism as we know it has come to an end. In my view, a social enterprise is a key vehicle in creating a new type of economy. We need to construct a different way of developing our societies, and social enterprises are in a unique position to do so. To me, a social enterprise is primarily about innovation, quality of life and the above mentioned triple bottom line approach. As such, it is a manifestation of Sustainable Development itself enabling us to re-think what kind of relationships we want to build with each other and the environment through doing business.

So when the opportunity to apply for the Director’s position came about, I didn’t need to think twice. I am absolutely thrilled about the development and work that has already been carried out by the Hub Helsinki community and am excited to have the opportunity to contribute to its success.

I’ll be moving back to Finland in a few weeks’ time and I’m really looking forward to meeting you all. No doubt there will be challenges ahead of us, but I’m sure it’ll also be extremely interesting, enthusing and rewarding as well.

Anne Raudaskoski has been appointed as the Director of Hub Helsinki as of 26th April 2010. Prior to this role, Anne has worked as a Sustainability Manager at the University of Westminster (London) developing and implementing the organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. Besides building up a strategic “triple bottom line” approach and delivering environmental programmes, her focus has been on public and community engagement and how its value could be measured through various social impact models, such as SROI (Social Return On Investment).

With a professional background in the arts and a Master’s degree in politics, she brings with her a unique and multidimensional expertise for the benefit of Hub Helsinki. As a Director her role will entail strategic vision building and delivering that vision, establishing new partnerships and developing resources to further social innovation through operations of Hub Helsinki.

The Hub Helsinki community is delighted that Anne will be joining us and we welcome her expertise and unique set of skills to the Hub community. The Hub Helsinki is an organisation that offers space and co-innovation opportunities for social innovators in Finland’s capital region. The Hub Helsinki is a community owned social enterprise.

As some of you may know, after a successful workshop events last week, we decided to open the Hub Helsinki proto space for use. We’re now inviting you to join us in creating meaningful connections, cranking up the grassroots-level action, and enjoying working together for a better world from the Hub proto-space at Aleksanterinkatu 16-18.

The space is yours to use from 9am to 5pm on all weekdays. If you have need of the space at other hours, that is also negotiable. We’ve got a number of events lined up already (more info coming soon!) and we welcome your ideas on that front as well.

For the time being there will be no charge for the use of the space for individuals working. Consider the space a work-in-progress. This means that it’s still rough around the edges and there’s plenty to do. But it also means that you can leave your mark by donating some of your time and skills into making it a space we can all enjoy and use.

As the space is limited and we would like to grow the community in a sustainable way, we would appreciate if you would let us know if you plan on bringing other people along. The general rule of thumb is that you’re welcome to bring in anyone who you feel you can trust and whom you think would be an interesting person to have in the Hub community.

The address of the proto space is Aleksanterinkatu 16-18. We will aim to keep the door open during business hours, but in case you end up being stuck behind the door, you can reach the host on the official Hub mobile at +358 44 352 6634.

We also created a mailing list, that will be used as the primary channel for getting posted on what’s happening in the space, so do sign up!

Seuraava askel Hubille on vetäjän etsiminen. Kuka uskoo siihen, että joukko yrittäjiä voi muuttaa maailmaa parempaan suuntaan—edes hieman? Kellä on intoa ja motivaatioita tehdä pitkää päivää yhteiskunnallisten innovaatioiden edistämiseksi? Kuka osaa lumota pörssiyhtiön toimitusjohtajan ja perhekodin pyörittäjän?

Tehtävät seuraavan 6 kuukauden ajan:

• Rahoituksen varmistaminen
• Liiketoiminnan määrittely ja käynnistäminen LTS:n pohjalta
• Yhteistyösopimukset
• Tilan jatkokartoitus

Hubin talous on pieni mutta vakaa ja toimi on toistaiseksi palkaton sekä toimisto kylmä. Tarvitaan siis tekemisen ja aatteen paloa!

In English: HUB Helsinki needs a director/dogsbody. Requirements: love for social innovations with practical implications. Office is cold and you have to raise funds to get paid, but you will be creating social impact and loving it.

Tapaaminen meni mukavissa merkeissä lähinnä toisiimme tutustuen, mutta ehdimmepä me myös miettiä miten voisimme tehdä yhteistyötä lähitulevaisuudessa. Tällä hetkellä yhteistyö pyörinee pääasiassa hyvin käytännöllisten asioiden parissa, kuten esim. rahoitus, markkinointi jne. Haluamme kuitenkin tarjota yhteisöjen jäsenille mahdollisuuden verkostoitumiseen ja toimintaan eri kaupungeissa, ja tämän osalta tapaaminen oli loistava pohjustus. Kiitos Jyväskylän Hub-väelle tapaamisen isännöinnistä!

In English: The representatives of the independent Hub projects in Finland—Tampere, Jyväskylä, Salo, and of course Helsinki—met last week to discuss potential for cooperation on the national level. The simultaneous interest from multiple cities has generated plenty of curiosity from the international Hub network. It also forms a great foundation for a national network which we aim to provide for our members in the different local Hub communities around the country.

The Pop-Up HUB week was a fantastic experience and I am so glad that so many people were able to join us. It was great to see Aalto University, the Finnish Institute and IDEO organise such a brilliant workshop in the HUB. The results of the workshop, and the spirit of the people working there, will most certainly live on and feed into the permanent HUB.

Twinspark (bow from the HUB community!) continued the contract with Helsinki for two more weeks and in that time the HUB was occasionally open and we were able to show few people around and explain the concept and the message. Those two weeks, however, are now coming to an end. There is no doubt that the HUB Helsinki has come to stay, but it is a matter of doing this in an organised and professional way. Therefore, there is a meeting 4 pm. on Sunday in the HUB (if you are in the facebook group you have received an invitation, if not, this is it), where we will discuss the legal form that is needed for the HUB and then that legal form will be registered next week.

After the HUB has been established as a legal entity it’s board, with help from as many members as possible,  will start continue the work on finances, partnership arrangements, the concept, and, of course, the permanent space.

Do keep following this blog and the facebook site. All these will be handed over to the HUB board once there is one.
